James Ogilvie Robertson graduated in Law from the University of Edinburgh where he also started working at the Woolpack pub, soon realising that gainful employment could be taken while pursuing his lifelong recreational activities. The Conran Group taught him the basics and was followed by five years with Marco Pierre White where James became one of the youngest General Managers Marco had ever appointed and took charge of venues such as Titanic, Drones and Quo Vadis.

James opened Lanes in 2003 to critical acclaim and awards, including Hardens Best New Restaurant London. Following a successful rebrand to the Marco Pierre White Steak & Alehouse in 2008, James opened a sister steakhouse in Chelsea in 2009, the Kings Road Steakhouse & Grill, the two restaurants forming the London Steakhouse Co.
